You can ride motorcycles and climb walls, but constantly push forward. Each fighter can carry three weapons, including a flame thrower, and you'll need them all to defeat mechs, buzzing insects, robots, aliens, and lava monsters. Certain weapons may be more effective against different enemies, but they can all get the job done -- if you live long enough. A simultaneous two-player mode offers cooperative play.
